American Civil War Museum

This new two-story, 30,000 SF museum will be located at the Historic Tredegar Ironworks site, one of America’s most significant Civil War sites. Tredegar is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register, and the new facility, set into a hillside, will encapsulate the ruins of the crumbling, back wall of the original Car Wheel Foundry structure from the late 1800s. The building will be built between two historical buildings, the Pattern Building and the Administrative Building, that currently serve as a museum and offices for the National Park Service. Both buildings, as well as the adjacent gift shop, will remain open during construction. The new facility will include gallery spaces, an experience theater, storage space and additional preservation areas for the Civil War artifacts, such as weapons, uniforms and additional items found on the battlefields.
