Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

This 160,000 SF, five-level, glass and stone wing expansion featured galleries for permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as expanded visitor amenities. A major feature of the expansion is a new atrium, which connects the new building with two existing wings and opens onto a new library, museum shop, café and galleries. Its glass roof will allow natural light to this central area and surrounding spaces.  It also returns the orientation of the museum's façade and entrance towards the street. The plan unites the museum's recently expanded 13-1/2-acre campus, which includes three historic buildings. The project was awarded the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Award in the Urban Communities and Sustainabilities category in 2004.
