Whiting-Turner
Mission
The mission of Whiting-Turner is to build on our reputation for integrity, excellence, experience and leadership as the nation’s finest construction organization by:
- Continuously improving the quality of our work and services.
- Constantly striving to exceed each client’s expectations.
- Maintaining our dedication to the highest moral principles.
- Providing our people with a challenging, secure and safe environment in which to achieve personal career goals.
Strength and Stability
Examination of the firm’s current management structure reveals the continued dedication to people. Staff continues to be developed and promoted from within, and their average years with the firm set industry standards. This is why Whiting-Turner has perennially climbed up the list of top domestic general building constructors as ranked by Engineering News Record—and has done so purely through growth, not acquisition.
The strength and stability of the firm is well documented. Whiting-Turner enjoys a 5A-1 Dun & Bradstreet rating, the only top 15 ENR domestic building constructor with this highest rating, and a bonding capacity of $4 billion. The firm is financially independent and is without debt.
Service Delivery
As illustrated in this chart, Whiting-Turner provides clients with a wide range of construction delivery system options. Our project management personnel are thoroughly cross-trained in all construction-related services. They can be called upon at any stage of a project to deliver valuable decision-making input. Each of the options shown represents a significant portion of the work completed by our firm over the last fifty years.
At every stage of a project, our management teams are supported by in-house specialists in areas such as building information modeling (BIM), mechanical and electrical review and coordination, historical cost data management, cost engineering, scheduling, safety/risk management, and LEED® sustainable construction.
Core Values
Whiting-Turner’s growth and success is attributable to the belief in, and strict adherence to the core values established nearly a century ago by the founders, G.W.C Whiting and LeBaron Turner, and exemplified by Willard Hackerman, president and CEO.
“He [G.W.C. Whiting] was marvelous. God gave me Mr. Whiting. He was the finest, most intelligent person I’ve ever met. He was a great engineer, a great businessman. Whatever this company is today, he deserves all the credit.”
-Willard Hackerman
Words such as integrity, loyalty, and customer delight—while routinely thrown about without meaning in business today—have always been taken very seriously by the firm. Whiting-Turner’s mission statement is the embodiment of these values.
Maintaining Corporate Culture
Clients have often remarked how amazed they are with the firm’s philosophical (adherence to the Mission Statement) and operational consistency across the nation. The reason is simple. There has never been a need to “sell” the company’s core values to the managers of our regional offices. There have been no outside company acquisitions. Every regional officer has been with Whiting-Turner since the early stages of their construction careers. In addition to the daily examples they set, they routinely instill the values of the firm in their people through events and programs such as:
- Annual Conference
- Annual Regional Business Meetings
- Quality, Safety and Service Awards
- National and Regional Training
- Group Social Events
Community Affairs
Willard Hackerman has always set the example for good corporate citizenship. The firm’s employees routinely give back to the communities in which they work by participating in charitable endeavors.
Equal Employment Opportunity
It is the policy and employment practice of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company not to discriminate against any qualified applicant for employment, or any qualified employee because of race, color, religion, age, sex, citizenship, national origin or disability, particularly with regard to employment, upgrading, demotion, transfer, recruitment advertising, lay-off and termination, compensation, apprenticeship and training, and work conditions.
It is the policy of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company to participate in an Affirmative Action Program set forth in Executive Order 11246 with specific attention to minority or female recruitment, training, upgrading and promotion.
It is the policy of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company not to discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because he or she is a Disabled Veteran or Veteran of the Vietnam Era, because of physical or mental handicap in regard to any position for which the employee or applicant is qualified.
Inclusion
For decades, The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company has actively promoted inclusion in the construction industry. The firm has been active in organizations such as the National Association of Minority Contractors to encourage the development, guidance and utilization of Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprises. The firm takes an active part in trade fairs, workshops and matchmaker programs designed to provide better opportunities. Whiting-Turner also participates at the national and local levels in various committees and boards focused on developing curricula and training programs to prepare disadvantaged businesses to enter the construction industry.
