Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

The project consists of the expansion of a 160,000 SF five-level glass and stone wing featuring galleries for permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as expanded visitor amenities. A major feature of the expansion is a new atrium, which will connect the new building with two existing wings, and open onto a new library, museum shop, café, and galleries. The atrium’s glass roof will allow natural light to this central area and surrounding spaces. It also returns the orientation of the museum's façade and entrance towards the street. The plan unites the museum's recently expanded 13 ½-acre campus, which includes three historic buildings. The project was awarded MIPIM/Architectural Review Future Project Award in the Urban Communities and Sustainabilities category in 2004.
