Emory and Georgia Tech Library Service Center
About
THIS PROJECT
Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology partnered to build the Library Service Center (LSC), which is a climate-controlled, 55,000 SF facility housing a shared collection between the two universities. The high-density facility holds millions of items, including retrospective paper and print, microfilm and archival collections. This facility supports their long-term strategy to repurpose library space on the central campuses of both Emory and Georgia Tech.
The LSC currently holds about 2.2 million volumes and approximately 95% of Georgia Tech’s collections. The facility is made up of 34,000 SF of space for the storage module and 21,000 SF for the processing and administrative areas. The archive module houses 35-foot-tall shelving along 12 aisles. The module has an extremely flat concrete floor to balance the height of the shelving and to allow stored volumes to be retrieved by a person on an order picker in very narrow aisles. The module is kept at 55⁰ F and less than 30% humidity to create a desirable environment for books to be preserved, and it is cooled by two custom desiccant air handling units.
