Elephant Springs is the second phase of the Fort Worth Zoo’s A Wilder Vision campaign to renovate and expand their animal exhibits. The Elephant Springs renovation and expansion includes:
- Multiple roaming areas
- 400,000-gallon pool
- Four waterfalls
- Large, artificial rockwork and theming
- Shaded viewing areas
- Zookeeper workspaces
- Automated, hydraulic gates
- Elevated boardwalks
- Decorative visitor paths
- Concession and merchandise stand
- Guest restrooms
- Upgraded utility infrastructure
The exhibit was specifically designed to connect all the yard space for one, large area to explore. Located onsite is also a barn with 15 individual stalls for the elephants, as well as an interconnected system to allow for the indoor area to open into one larger space with sand flooring. The barn is climate-controlled and includes indoor and outdoor training spaces for hands-on examinations of the animals.
Additional features of the space include a prep kitchen, food pantry and a modern water filtration system to purify and circulate the water around the exhibit. The project was completed in two phases, allowing the elephant herd to remain on exhibit during construction. Elephant Springs won a globally recognized Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) award for Outstanding Achievement in 2022.
