Honoring the courage and selflessness of Sandy Hook’s heroic first grade teacher, the Victoria Soto School is new 36,000 SF, single-story elementary school for approximately 280 pre-kindergarten through second graders. The brightly colored facility is located in the residential neighborhood of Stratford, Connecticut, where Soto grew up. The school includes:
- 14 classrooms with smart boards
- Gymnasium and elevated stage area
- Kitchen and cafeteria
- Art and music room
- Administration area
In addition, Victoria Soto’s family petitioned an artist to create a mosaic that illustrates the words “Be Kind” to be placed in the school. The large mural includes green flamingo tiles, Soto’s favorite animal. Many pieces were designed and glued onto the mosaic by her family.
The facility also has extensive security features, including bullet-resistant glass and hidden cameras. There is fully monitored security system with all entrances of the building monitored by CCTV and door entry controls. School visitors must be buzzed in and each classroom has a phone, bathroom and doors that lock from the inside.
