Penn State Hershey Medical Center Children’s Hospital Vertical Expansion

About

THIS PROJECT

The Penn State Hershey Medical Center Children’s Hospital Vertical Expansion consisted of a 125,000 SF vertical expansion of the facility. The project included adding levels 6, 7 and 8 to the existing hospital and a partial renovation of the fifth floor. The hospital remained open and operational throughout construction.

The expansion accommodates women’s health services including labor and delivery, postpartum, antepartum, C-section suites, pediatric inpatient beds and a NICU. MEP services were provided from the central campus systems. Risers were extended to the new floors and new air handling unit and normal/emergency power substations were added to serve the expansion. Five elevators were extended to the new floors and two new elevators were added.

Extensive Coordination

AND COMMUNICATION

As part of the Children’s Hospital Vertical Expansion, we made 225 slab penetrations and 79 plumbing tie-ins to the operational fourth floor, which houses the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. We completed all work without adversely affecting the day-to-day operations of the Children’s Hospital and the care of their most critical patients. Our success was derived from our plan, extensive coordination, constant communication and a collaborative team approach.
