Alice West Fleet Elementary School

About

THIS PROJECT

The Alice West Fleet Elementary School, named for a long-time Arlington County educator, is a 110,000 SF, four-story facility designed to achieve net-zero energy status. Construction occurred on an occupied middle school campus and required extensive coordination efforts. The new school has capacity for 725 students and includes:

  • Classrooms equipped with interactive screens
  • Gymnasium
  • Cafeteria and kitchen
  • Library
  • Art rooms
  • Administrative space
  • Playground
  • Structured parking

The design of the school was driven by its net-zero energy goal. The facility is powered by a 500kW rooftop solar array and geothermal heating and cooling systems, and it includes many other sustainable features that reduce its carbon footprint. In addition, it is pursuing LEED® Gold certification, and the design was influenced by WELL building standards, which promote the health and wellbeing of the building occupants.
