Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts Phase II

About

THIS PROJECT

Phase II of the Dr. Phillips Center of Performing Arts is a 127,000 SF expansion consisting of Steinmetz Hall and the Green Room. Steinmetz Hall is a three-tier acoustical theater accommodating 1,700 guests. The theater has a retractable, four-level orchestra shell and operable seating area to configure the theater, which allows the facility to adjust to each performance’s needs. This is the first facility in the United States to include an occupiable orchestra shell and operable floor in one theater. The Green Room is a 9,000 SF rehearsal room and gathering place for performers and guests for programming, recording and intimate performances. The project also added additional lobby space and full kitchen facilities.

Along with the performing arts center and its education and entertainment venues, the two-block site accommodates public spaces that enhance city life and create a vibrant gathering place. The front-of-house lobby is nearly all architecturally exposed structural steel and includes a 70-foot-tall shotcrete wave wall. The design architects’ vision was to provide the finished appearance of a ship’s hull. The facility houses the Orlando Ballet, Opera Orlando and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.
