THIS PROJECT

The Egyptian Theatre restoration project upgraded the historic 1920s venue, home to the first Hollywood movie premiere, into a venue for Netflix film screenings. To restore the theatre’s historic character, the renovation preserved the original façades and exterior features of the buildings. The 1997 interior modifications such as a screening room, reversible seats, a balcony and an acoustic system were removed. The main theatre renovation added 516 seats and six wheelchair spaces with a riser system, projector and sound system. Additional amenities within the venue include:

As part of their Lean efforts, the project team engaged in pull planning sessions both physically and digitally. This was crucial to the project for preservation of the historical building and the several trade partners involved in the project.

This project achieved the 2024 Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation’s Chair Award, which recognizes restorative projects that contribute to Los Angeles County’s historic environment. The California Preservation Foundation honored the project with the 2025 Preservation Design Award, celebrating its outstanding achievement in historic preservation.
