THIS PROJECT
The Alexandria Police Station is a 136,000 SF police headquarters and operations facility consisting of three buildings on a 3.5-acre site. The facility brings together all of the bureaus within the department into one facility for the first time since the 1870s. The main three-story building includes:
- Interview rooms
- Advanced criminal investigations laboratory
- Secure property and evidence storage
- Gym, locker and shower area
- Meeting rooms and assembly space
- 911 emergency communications center

There is also a 500-space, 184,000 SF, five-story parking garage and a small prefabricated maintenance facility building. The site includes a 50-space surface visitor parking lot, bioretention ponds and landscaping. The project’s advanced security features include:
- Anti-ram/anti-scale fencing
- Controlled access gates with vehicle barriers
- Anti-ram bollards
- Bullet-resistant protections
- Bullet-resistant glazing at critical locations
This project achieved LEED® Gold certification and won the following awards:
- International Illumination Design Award of Merit by "Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, District of Columbia Section"
- Excellence in Design Award in the Government/Institutional category by "Environmental Design Construction
Fallen Officers
MEMORIAL
After completing the facility, Whiting-Turner was hand-selected to construct the Fallen Officers Memorial on the plaza area. The memorial honors the police officers who have lost their lives serving the City of Alexandria. The Police Foundation worked with Whiting-Turner to construct the memorial, which consists of five free-standing glass panels that have the names of the fallen officers etched into the panel. The memorial also includes benches with commemorative plaques dating back to the 1800s, as well as a timeline that outlines the history of the police department.
