Construction of the Franklin County Justice Center involved partial demolition, historic restoration, interior renovation and expansion of the Greenfield Courthouse, which was originally constructed in the 1930s. A four-story, 83,000 SF addition was connected to the remaining 22,000 SF front half of the existing facility through extensive coordination and planning to accommodate differing floor elevations. The project also restored and reconfigured the original building for the clerk and probation departments. The existing structure was underpinned and then braced with supplemental structural steel. Steel windows were replaced with historic replicas and the masonry façade was repaired, repointed and cleaned. Original lighting fixtures, millwork and building carvings were also restored and relocated.

The project was fully coordinated with BIM for mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, structure and courtroom metal stud framing. The coordination was extremely beneficial, as the low floor-to-floor heights in the original building limited space for installation of the necessary mechanical equipment and piping.

This project is pursuing LEED® Silver certification.
