Cedar Crest Emergency Department Expansion and Renovation

About

THIS PROJECT

The Cedar Crest Emergency Department project included a 130,000 SF expansion of the emergency department, a 40,000 SF renovation for a children’s emergency department and construction of a 9,000 SF elevated helipad. The facility, which has the largest emergency department in Pennsylvania, includes:

  • 97 adult emergency department rooms
  • 59 adult observation rooms
  • 27 children’s emergency department rooms
  • 12 children’s observation rooms
  • Full-service laboratory
  • Inpatient pediatric pharmacy
  • Cardiac testing areas
  • Physical therapy space
  • Critical care space
  • CT, MRI and X-ray lab spaces
  • Behavioral health services and six dedicated behavioral health rooms
  • Three trauma bays and space that can accommodate a fourth bay
  • Trauma operating room
  • Bariatric room
  • Nursing stations
  • Locker rooms
  • Café

The Emergency Department contains a Level-1 Trauma Center and averages 90,000 visits per year. During construction, the facility remained operational. The team developed a phased life-safety plan and temporary corridors to allow the renovation work to progress while isolating the patients and staff from construction. The expansion also required relocating the helipad, as well as extensive sitework and the rerouting of campus utilities.
