THIS PROJECT
USDA Consolidated Laboratory Facility (CLF) is a 575,000 SF testing and research laboratory building located in Ames, Iowa. The USDA CLF brings together previously separated divisions of the Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and Agricultural Research Service into one laboratory environment for the first time. Allowing for close collaboration between departments, the BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-3 Enhanced lab spaces provide the USDA with state-of-the-art research capabilities with room for future expansion and adjustments based upon needs, testing procedures and protocols.

Laboratory Building
The four-story, 367,000 SF laboratory building consists of a basement and three floors above-grade, interstitial levels and mechanical penthouse. Program spaces in the basement include a caged animal facility, aquaculture, support space, storage and lab support services. Floors one through three house the BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-3 Enhanced laboratories and lab offices.
Administration Building
The three-story, 90,000 SF administration building includes offices, kitchen and dining, conference and training, fitness center, security, information technology support and other related spaces.
Service Building
The single-story, 78,000 SF service building includes animal care offices, health and safety spaces, storage, dock and receiving, mail and clothing dispensing.
The project site was over an existing trash site from the 1950s. To remedy the improper disposal of a specific chemical, Whiting-Turner built a containment pond for collection of contaminated soils. The treatment was to collect irrigated water from the soil to treat the chemical, which broke down in sunlight. After treatment, the clean water was used to re-irrigate the contaminated soils, in a cycle repeated until testing proved satisfactory levels had been achieved.
This project achieved LEED® certification.
