Leidos Advanced Technology Research Facility

About

THIS PROJECT

This project included the interior construction and base building upgrades of an existing core and shell building for an advanced research laboratory supporting the National Cancer Institute program. The facility is 242,600 SF and includes:

  • 171,000 SF of BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories
  • 64,000 SF of biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing
  • More than 20,000 LF of process piping

Building systems consist of five custom penthouse air handling units, featuring laboratory quality air with integral strobic exhaust fans and heat recovery units, as well as laboratory support utility equipment, including vacuum pumps, air compressors and clean-steam generators. These units are supported by three gas-fired, high-pressure steam boilers, water-cooled chillers and a chilled-beam variable air volume supply system.

The cGMP bio-processing development area is constructed of modular cleanroom, wall panels and ceilings, with clean process utilities (WFI, pure steam, CIP, pharm. air, etc.) which support the processing suites. Some of the process equipment installed within the suite include bioreactors, custom biosafety cabinets, vial washers, cappers, and cGMP autoclaves.

Procurement, installation, start-up and enhanced commissioning of all building systems, process systems and process equipment was required within the 18-month construction schedule. Close coordination utilizing 3D modeling was the key to delivering this state-of-the-art facility on time.

This project received three Green Globes.
